Earlier this year, I learned about The Appalachian Retreat and Spa, and I cannot tell you how excited I am that a body inclusivity retreat is going to exist. You can read more about it here, but to summarize, they’re a “luxury retreat center” that will be accessible to large bodies and folks with disabilities.
Let me tell you that the moment I learned about them, I was in. I’ve never been excited to visit West Virginia before, but I am now!
I’m telling you this because they are raising funds to make this space a reality.
I have a feeling it’s going to happen no matter what, but I’m going to do what I can to help.
Here’s what I’d love to see you do to support body inclusivity:
- Please visit their Indiegogo campaign and donate if you can.
- Please share their campaign in as many places as you can: Facebook, IG, TikTok, wherever.
- Please follow them on your preferred social media platform. I follow them on IG, where they are interactive and lovely!
They aren’t paying me. They didn’t ask me to do this. It’s a space that humanity needs, and I can’t wait to see it become a reality.
Honestly, there are so many luxury, wellness, and spa spaces I will not visit because their websites and marketing promote weight loss, detoxing, and so-called purification, which is the white supremacy wellness industry’s buzzword. Even if they claim to be inclusive, they never have robes big enough for large bodies, chairs for wide asses like mine, or massage tables that feel like they can handle us. I’ve found one space in my entire life that I’m comfortable in, and while I adore them, they don’t have everything I’d like to try.
Certainly, there are plus-size travel groups. Only recently have I started considering those. But my social anxiety spikes when I think about it. I’m not much of a group traveler. I want to vacation in a retreat space with Hubster knowing we aren’t getting dirty looks because we’re fat. The Appalachian Retreat and Spa feels like it’ll be perfect for that very thing.
I know this reads like a big ad for them, and maybe I should consider going into marketing for this kind of thing. That said, no, this truly is just me wanting a fat-friendly space to be pampered for more than an hour. Body inclusivity for the win!
