Correction/Clarification: Last week, I mentioned Chef Enosh Kelley in connection with Steer n’ Stein. A local source informed me Michael Krantz, who once owned Adventureland, now owns Steer n’ Stein. That puts a whole new spin on that one for me. Thank you to my source!
Des Moines Openings, Closings, and Such
- Closing
- New Le’s Chiniese Bar-B-Que is reportedly closing this summer. They’re trying to find a new location (via Vivian Phabmixay Tran and Eat with Mo). Not gonna lie: I’m taking this one personally. I finally get there, write a piece about them, and after 20 years, they’re closing?! 😭
- Open
- Good Day DSM, once in Valley West Mall, has their soft opening on February 10th and 11th in Ankeny.
- Toro Loco is now open in Clive. We drove by it, and I thought it looked new, but I couldn’t remember. Realtor Paul Walter mentioned it in his newsletter recently. Paul is one of my many resources for local news!
- Chain News: Hokkaido Ramen House is now open in Ankeny, per eatwithmo.dsm.
- Coming Soon
- El Toreado 2 will open soon on Fleur. They’re going where Maria’s and Taco John’s were.
- Chikin Lickin is still in the coming soon category, but Linh Ta had a great piece on them in Axios!
- Bits and Bobs
- It appears Gluten Free Steils will operate out of Moxie Kitchen + Events. The Gluten-Free Division of Foodie 515 says “they have delicious food.”
- If anyone has the deets on 58 Venezuelan Food Truck and Ricos Tacos Toluca, please let me know!
- 1908 Draught House in WDM had 13 inspection violations, including handwashing issues. Wash your hands after touching raw meat, kids.
- Susan Stapleton had a wonderful piece in The Reg about new places in the metro. My random observations:
- We’ve got four new places with “tavern” in the name.
- Of the 17 new places, eight of them opened in Ankeny.
- Ankeny, could you please fix your traffic issues? If I’m gonna come there, I don’t want to be exhausted by the time I get to the food.
- Crème (when don’t I talk about Crème), Dumpling House, and Anousone Coffee are partnering for a Lunar New Year pop-up on 2/10. I’m not one to turn down dumplings, milk tea, and cupcakes all in the same place.
- The 2024 Pho King Cook-Off is Sunday, February 18th! I’ve never been, but I’m seriously considering going. I’ve always loved that name.

Recs! Recs! Recs!
- I’m going by myself to see Barry Manilow in concert for my birthday, so don’t tell me I’m not ringing in my late 40s the wrong way.
- You can also raise money for rescues by celebrating love!
- I bought this.
- And these.
- You don’t have to have been following along with my adventures for long to know I adore Sisters in Cheese. Chelsea and co. had a rough January, so I want to remind you they have upcoming goodies.
- I don’t have much in the way of visuals this week. I haven’t gone anywhere lately!
WTF, Des Moines?
- If you didn’t know, the owner of Jethro’s and Splash is . . . something else.
- Are you ready for more construction, Ingersollians?
- Please remember to stay up for our LGBTQ+ community because Killer Kim would prefer they didn’t exist.
Food Fight
I asked this question on Instagram. These were the results. So, tell me. What do you think? Is it cruel or wrong to order delivery in shitty weather? Discuss in the comments, please!
