Des Moines Openings, Closings, and Such
- Coming Soon
- Basic Bird (from Joe Tripp of Harbinger and Little Brother) is on the verge of opening!
- Guesthouse Tavern + Oyster is opening sometime next year.
- Mullets is opening a location in Norwalk. I don’t know why I find this odd, but I do.
- Best Day Coffee is opening in Altoona. They have so few local coffeeshop options that this is nice to see.
- Tortas la Silla Food Truck is out there somewhere!
- Re-Opened
- Lzaza had been closed since the end of May, but I saw this on Reddit saying they’re back open. Lzaza’s own Facebook page confirms this, but they’ve also added grocery items.
- The Heart and Seoul Kitchen is now operating out of Kitchen Spaces.
- Now Open
- Closing
- Dough Crazy is closing their storefront, but they’re keeping their food truck.
- Beer Can Alley on Court Ave. closed permanently.
- Barbarian, a fine dining establishment operating within Kinship, is permanently closed. But about that:
- Kinship Brewing is being foreclosed upon. They owe an astonishing $5.9 million. However, Kinship itself is not closing.
- The worst part about this story is, not only are the folks at Barbarian out of work, but the Kinship employees aren’t being paid. That is NEVER a good sign. The folks who worked at Tacopocalypse and BAH Brazilian Steakhouse suffered the same fate, and I have no idea if any of those folks were paid.
- Kinship Brewing is being foreclosed upon. They owe an astonishing $5.9 million. However, Kinship itself is not closing.
- Probably Coming Soon but I’m Finding Nothing:
- El Sazon de Lupita (DSM)
- Izumi Sushi and Hibachi (Clive)
- Pupuseria de la Rosa (DSM)
- Cafe Boost (Urbandale)
Please consider buying me a chai!
Recs! Recs! Recs!
- My fam loves Sisters in Cheese for the holidays, and frankly, I love SiC year-round. I popped over to Madrid to pick up holiday grazing boxes for the family, and while I was there, I got my fix of the apple orchard sammie. Easily one of my favorite eats of the year. Plus, Chelsea Johnsen, owner and chef, won Rural Operator of the Year!
- We recently dined (again) at Cooper’s on 5th, and I cannot tell you how happy I am that they take online reservations through OpenTable!
WTF, Iowa
- There’s a lot to dislike in this story, but what gets me are the numbers. A total of “142 churches in Iowa that have left the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church over differing beliefs on same-sex marriage and ordaining openly LGBTQ clergy” i.e. 142 Methodist churches in Iowa are bigoted. But that’s only “19% of the churches in Iowa’s conference.” Only 19% of the Methodist churches in Iowa. Tell me again how Christianity is under attack in this country. Because I guarantee you there aren’t 142 mosques or synagogues in Iowa. Total.
- This is why I love this city. You never know what animals will be wandering our streets.
